James Meador-Woodruff, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology in the UAB School of Medicine, has been named the recipient of the 2013 Research Mentorship Award of the American Psychiatric Association, a specialty society that represents more than 33,000 psychiatric physicians.
Meador-Woodruff was previously awarded the 2007 Kempf Fund Award for research development in psychobiological psychiatry from the American Psychiatric Institute for Research and Education.
Mönkemüller honored by professional journal
Klaus Mönkemüller, MD, PhD, FASGE, professor in the UAB Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and medical director of the Basil I. Hirschowitz Endoscopic Center of Excellence at UAB, was awarded the prize for best peer reviewer of the journal Endoscopy during the United European Gastroenterology Week recently held in Amsterdam.
Mönkemüller is a pioneer in gastrointestinal endoscopy and sits on the editorial boards of several top gastrointestinal journals, including Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Endoscopy, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and the Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology.
Seng-jaw Soong, PhD Obituary
Seng-jaw Soong, PhD, Associate Director Emeritus of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center passed away in December at age 69.
Soong established the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics group at UAB from 1976 to 2008. During the 32 years he led this group, he collaborated in publishing over 300 peer-reviewed medical publications covering areas from AIDS to his primary research interest, melanoma.
In 1999, Soong was named the first recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Award in the Cancer Center for his contributions to cancer research and to the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. In 2008, he retired as professor emeritus of the Division of Preventive Medicine, director emeritus of the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Unit, and associate director emeritus of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Soong received his master’s degree in statistics from Oregon State in 1970 and his PhD in biostatistics from UAB in 1976. He is survived by his wife, Mayhue Soong; his sons, Weily Soong, MD, a physician at Alabama Allergy and Asthma Center and Peily Soong, MD, a physician at Pediatrics East.
Comfort Care Working With Conversation Project
Comfort Care Home Health and Hospice is working with The Conversation Project to encourage families to have conversations about individual preference for end-of-life care.
“We plan for births, graduations, weddings. Why do we avoid life’s most important conversation?” said Lisa Teel, Regional Administrator at Comfort Care Hospice. “We want to promote this conversation while people are healthy, not when a medical crisis occurs.”
The Conversation Project is a campaign designed to promote end-of-life conversations with tools including a Conversation Starter Kit. The Kit contains questions for families to use to begin these difficult conversations about end-of-life.
Comfort Care Home Health and Comfort Care Hospice are working with The Conversation Project to provide The Conversation Starter Kit to families throughout Alabama. Kits will be available at physician offices, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and Comfort Care offices.
McMillan Joins AccelAbility
Corey McMillan PT, MS has joined AccelAbility Physical Therapy (formerly Accelerated Physical Therapy) where he serves as clinic director in AccelAbility’s new Homewood location.
McMillan graduated from UAB with his Masters of Science in Physical Therapy in 2001. He became a clinic director at a physical therapy practice in Trussville in 2007.
Women’s Health Specialists Of Birmingham Has Opened A Clinic
Women’s Health Specialists of Birmingham has opened a clinic on the St. Vincent’s Birmingham campus. The practice is staffed by Jesanna Cooper, MD; Alison Heaton, MD; William Hudson, MD; and nurse practitioner Belinda Isley. The physicians have over 30 years of combined experience and are all credentialed in robotic surgery.
Jessana Cooper, MD was previously on staff at St. Vincent’s East. She received her medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine and completed her residency at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City.
Alison Heaton, MD has been on staff at St. Vincent’s Birmingham for 10 years. She received her medical degree from the University of South Alabama and completed her residency at Indiana University.
William Hudson, MD has been on staff at St. Vincent’s Birmingham for five years. Hudson received his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
The practice is one of two new practices at St. Vincent’s Birmingham.
SALSAL Honors Carraway
The Save a Leg Save a Life Foundation (SALSAL) recently held an event to honor Robert Carraway, MD for his contributions to bariatric medicine. Carraway introduced a number of innovative healthcare services to the Birmingham area, including the first airborne medical emergency service and the first hyperbaric oxygen therapy department and wound care center in Alabama.

Franklin and Short Join St. Vincent’s
Lisa Franklin, MD and Glori Short, MD have joined Henderson and Walton Women’s Center and will see patients in Birmingham and Cullman, while delivering babies at St. Vincent’s Birmingham.
Franklin received her medical degree from the University of South Alabama and completed her residency at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta.
Short received her medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. She completed her residency at Memorial Mission Hospital in Ashville, North Carolina.
Nevels and Clark Join Medical West
Charles Nevels, MD has joined the Medical West medical staff as a Geriatric Psychiatrist, serving as Co-Medical Director for the new Geriatric Psych Unit. Nevels received his undergraduate degree from Emory University and his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He completed his internship and residency with the Menninger School of Psychiatry. Before joining Medical West, he served as Medical Director of the geripsychiatry unit at Cooper Green Mercy Hospital.
Nathan Clark has joined Medical West as the Director of Business Development. Clark received his undergraduate degree in Healthcare Management from the University of Alabama and his masters in Healthcare Administration from UAB. He completed his administrative residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital. Before joining Medical West, Nathan was Project Manager for healthcare consulting company, Adams Management Services.
Andrews Sports Medicine Doctors Speak at ASMI
James Andrews, MD, Jeffrey Dugas, MD, and Lyle Cain, MD spoke at the American Sports Medicine Insitute’s 31st Injuries in Baseball course on January 25th in Phoenix, Arizona.
Andrews offers the multi-disciplinary course each year, designed to attract all members of baseball healthcare teams. The course is attended by physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, coaches, scientists and players, with representation from all levels of the game, including youth, high school, and college sports specialists, as well as members of professional sports organizations.
“This course offers each presenter the opportunity to share their knowledge and expertise and let others learn from their years of experience,” said Lyle Cain, MD. “Participants will also have the opportunity to see the latest in equipment, allowing them to be on the cutting-edge of baseball injury diagnosis, treatment and prevention.”
