American Family Care Breaks Ground on New Clinic

On January 25th, American Family Care broke ground on a new location on Highway 280. The 14,500 square foot facility, which will be American Family Care’s 14th Birmingham location, will include digital x-ray and electronic medical records. The company has also started construction on the relocation of their Irondale clinic, which will open in March.



Trinity Medical Center Names News CEO

Trinity Medical Center has named Bill Heburn as Chief Executive Officer. Heburn previously served as Vice President of Division 1 Operations for Community Health Systems (CHS) overseeing hospitals in Alabama, Florida and Louisiana. He joined CHS in March 2006, bringing 35 years of hospital management experience, including five years of international hospital operations and development experience.

During his healthcare career, Heburn has served as Vice President of Hospital Operations for Essent Healthcare and Divisional Senior Vice President for Health Management Associates, with both acquisitional and operational management responsibilities for multiple facilities. He has been CEO of several hospitals, both domestic and international. Additionally, Heburn has experience as a Market Vice President for a managed care firm with vertical integration of health plans and hospitals. He is a diplomat of the American College of Healthcare Executives.



Brookwood Medical Center Awarded Five United Health Premium® Specialty Center Designations

Brookwood Medical Center has received five United Premium® Specialty Center designations for 2007 to 2009. These designations mean that the hospital has met rigorous quality criteria based on nationally recognized medical standards.

Brookwood Medical Center received designations in the areas of Total Joint Replacement, Surgical Spine, Cardiovascular Surgery, Electrophysiology and Interventional Cardiology.

“We are pleased that our hospital has been recognized by UnitedHealthcare for the high quality care that we provide,” said Garry Gause, chief executive officer of Brookwood. “Our physicians and staff work very hard to provide quality patient care.”


Behavioral Health Systems Names Vice President, Provider Relations

Birmingham-based Behavioral Health Systems has hired David Johnson as Vice President, Provider Relations. Johnson has more than 20 years experience as a senior health care executive, having served as Vice President of Managed Care Services for Baptist Health Systems of Alabama. He has also served as Executive Director of the Alabama Healthcare Council.

Johnson holds a Bachelor of Science in Medical Record Administration from the University of Mississippi and a Master of Science in Hospital and Health Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.


Dearth Inducted into Alabama Health Care Hall of Fame

Jim Dearth, MD, former chief executive officer of Children’s Health System, has been selected as a 2008 member of the Alabama Health Care Hall of Fame for his outstanding contributions to health care.

The Hall of Fame program has received enthusiastic support throughout the state since its inception in 1997.

The Hall of Fame awards ceremony will be held March 29 in Montgomery.


Jordan Joins DCH

Chris Jordan, DO, has joined the medical staff at the DCH Cancer Treatment Center as a medical oncologist. Jordan comes to DCH from The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in Fort Worth, Texas.

Jordan received a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas and his doctor of osteopathy degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Bioscience. He completed his internship and residency at the University of North Texas — Osteopathic Medical Center of Texas and his fellowship in medical oncology at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.


Stansell is Chairman-Elect of PRSA Health Academy Board of Directors

Garland Stansell, director of communications for Children’s Health System, has been named chairman-elect for 2008 of the Public Relations Society of America’s Health Academy Board of Directors.

Stansell has over 20 years experience in public relations, health promotion, advocacy and fundraising, including 13 years with Children’s Health System (CHS). Prior to joining CHS, he served as vice president of development and communications for Alabama Goodwill Industries and as assistant director of corporate communications for BancBoston Mortgage Company.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in mass communications, public relations and business from UAB and a master’s in public and private management from Birmingham Southern College.
