DCH Honors Breast Cancer Awareness Month
DCH Health System is honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month by offering extended hours for mammography at DCH Regional Medical Center and Northport Medical Center during October.
The Breast Center at Northport Medical Center will be open from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Oct. 1, Oct. 15 and Oct. 29. The Breast Center at the Phelps Outpatient Center on the Regional Medical Center campus will be open be from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Oct. 11 and Oct. 25.
“We’re calling it a Mammothon,” said Brenda Posey, mammography coordinator for the Health System. “We hope that these extended hours will accommodate working women who have put off getting a mammogram because it didn’t fit into their workday schedule.”
“If you have no prior history of breast cancer, and it’s been at least 12 months since your last mammogram, talk to your physician about scheduling a mammogram during next month’s Mammothon,” Posey said.
Appointments can be made at Northport Medical Center by calling 330-3031. Appointments can be made at DCH Regional Medical Center by calling 759-7312 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Munden to Lead Radiology at UAB
Dr. Reginald Munden, a national leader in diagnostic imaging, is the new chair of radiology at UAB. Munden currently is department chairman ad interim of diagnostic radiology in the division of diagnostic imaging at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
Munden began his career as a dentist, earning his bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of South Carolina and his doctorate in medical dentistry from the College of Dental Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. Munden returned to MUSC to earn his medical degree and conduct his residency in diagnostic radiology.
Robbin Inducted as Fellow in American College of Radiology
UAB Professor of Radiology Michelle L. Robbin, MD, has been inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Radiology.
Robbin is chief of ultrasound at UAB. She is on the board of governors of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, and on the editorial boards of Radiology, Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine, and Ultrasound Quarterly.
Robbin also is a member of the Alabama Academy of Radiology and is a Fellow in the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound and American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. She earned her medical degree from Mayo Medical School in 1985.
Gerald Takes Reins of UAB Lung Center
Lynn Gerald, PhD, associate professor in the division of pulmonary, allergy and critical care medicine, has been named director of the UAB Lung Health Center. Gerald, who has been with the center for 10 years most recently as assistant director, replaces William Bailey, MD, who will continue as medical director of the center.
“The Lung Health Center has been a leader in the field of clinical research largely due to Dr. Bailey’s leadership over the past 21 years and has gained national recognition in the fields of asthma, tuberculosis and COPD,” said Gerald. “He will continue to be actively involved in Center.”
Gerald also announced that Mark Dransfield, MD, assistant professor in the division of pulmonary, allergy and critical care, will assume the duties of assistant medical director.
Clemens Named Editor-in-Chief of Bone Journal
UAB Division of Molecular and Cellular Pathology Director Thomas L. Clemens, PhD, has been named Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.
Besides serving as division director, Clemens is a pathology professor and director of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute graduate fellowship program at UAB. He also holds a research position at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Birmingham.
Clemens serves as the principal investigator for several federal-funded research projects currently ongoing at UAB and the VA hospital. He earned his doctoral degree in biochemistry from the University of London, England, in 1980.
The Journal of Bone and Mineral Research is the highest ranked bone journal and focuses on all areas of the biology and physiology of bone, hormones that regulate bone and the pathophysiology and treatment of disorders of bone and mineral metabolism including osteoporosis.
Faulkner Named to New Position at Baptist Health System
Princeton Baptist Medical Center President Charles Faulkner has accepted a new position within Baptist Health System, leading market development and physician engagement efforts for the system. His new role will include serving as president of Baptist Health Centers (BHC), the System’s physician organization.
Faulkner was named president of Princeton Baptist in November 1998 after holding a number of positions within BHS. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Montevallo and a master’s degree in Hospital and Health Administration from UAB.
He has received numerous honors throughout his career including Outstanding Alumnus Award, UAB graduate program in Health Administration in 1990 and in 2001; various positions in the Alabama Hospital Association including chairman in 2006; Blue Cross Hospital Advisory Board Chairman, 2006; Executive Committee, Governor Bob Riley/Congressman Arthur Davis Black Belt Action Committee; Samford University’s Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing Advisory Board; and Chairman of Birmingham Regional Emergency Medical Services System.
Warren Named CEO of Children’s Health System
The Children’s Health System Board of Trustees announced today that Wm. Michael Warren, Jr. has been elected the next Chief Executive Officer of the Birmingham-based pediatric healthcare system, effective January 1, 2008.
Currently Chairman of Energen Corporation, Warren will succeed Jim Dearth, MD, who announced his retirement earlier this year.
“I am delighted to be the next CEO of the Children’s Health System,” said Warren. “I am looking forward to helping the system build on its past successes.”
Warren has been with Energen, Alabama Gas Corporation (Alagasco) and Energen Resources Corporation since 1983. He became President of Alagasco in 1984, CEO of Energen in 1997 and was elected Chairman of Board in 1998. Warren also is a director of Protective Life Corporation, Royal Cup Coffee and the Associated Electric and Gas Insurance Services Limited.
