GENERAL SUMMARY
Employees in this class perform highly technical laboratory work in serological, bacteriological, hematological, or biochemical analyses in laboratory testing and examinations of various samples of blood and other body fluids and specimens in a clinical setting. Duties are in all areas of the lab such as hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, serology, and chemistry. Work is according to prescribed policies and procedures and is revised under the general guidance of a supervisor. Work involves frequent exposure to biohazardous body fluids. Daily functions may include incidental exposure to vapors, fumes, moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, chemical, and biological hazards, patient contact, waste handling, and computer use.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Sets up various analyzers and ensures laboratory-testing equipment is functioning properly prior to performing tests on specimens by troubleshooting problems with equipment, performing regular maintenance, and conducting quality assurance testing.
2. Maintains storage equipment and ensures all lab products and supplies (e.g., specimens, reagents, controls, etc.) are safely and properly stored.
3. Follows all laboratory safety regulations and accreditation standards.
4. Receives, evaluates and processes patient specimens. Performs a variety of laboratory tests on specimens in one or more of the following laboratory specialties: chemistry, hematology and coagulation, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, and urinalysis. Performs proficiency testing in compliance with regulatory agencies.
5. Analyzes test results according to lab order using various procedures.
6. Must possess sufficient academic, technical, and clinical skills and knowledge to evaluate, trouble shoot, research, and resolve day-to-day problems that arise or special projects as assigned by the supervisor or manager.
7. Communicates with patients, providers, nurses, and other staff in a knowledgeable and professional manner.
8. Trains and reviews work of students and new MLTs. Maintains current competency by completion of annual continuing education.
9. Participates in the collection of data for quality assessments. Performs clerical duties as needed.
10. May assist with point of care program under the supervision of the lab supervisor.
Position Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Associate’s degree and graduation from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology program. Work experience may not substitute for education requirement.
Must be Board-registered or eligible for registry as a Medical Lab Technician (MLT) with the American Society for clinical Pathology (ASCP) or with the American Medical Technologists (AMT) prior to hire date.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This role may require lifting up to 50 lbs.
