Wendy Marsh-Tootle, OD and Patti S. Fuhr, OD, professors at the UAB School of Optometry presented lectures to international researchers and eye care professionals at the Inaugural World Congress on Refractive Error and Service Development, which was held in Durban, South Africa in March. Marsh-Tootle discussed infant eye examination techniques and explained how caregivers need to modify their methods when prescribing glasses for babies. Fuhr discussed low vision rehabilitation techniques for adults and talked about how specialized training and devices can improve function for those with irreversible vision loss. Together, Marsh-Tootle and Fuhr shared their experiences creating an eye care system for pre-school children in Nicaragua, with hopes that similar programs can be implemented in other areas of the world.
