Alabama Allergy & Asthma Center announces a new treatment option available for peanut allergy sufferers through their new OIT(Oral Immunotherapy) Program. Peanut desensitization, also known as oral immunotherapy, is an up-and-coming treatment option that, under the careful supervision of the allergist/immunologist, introduces a specific amount of food allergen to a patient daily in escalating doses escalating doses in order to create immune system tolerance.
Subcutaneous and sublingual immunotherapy are popular treatments for people with environmental allergies, such as hay fever. With no approved treatments to cure or treat food allergies, families with food allergies must follow strict avoidance with constant observation for any accidental reaction. The decision to offer the innovative treatment option is based on continued positive findings from nationwide studies. The goal of the new OIT Program is to minimize the patient's risk for food anaphylaxis and improve their overall quality of life.
