Nurse Practitioner Wins Cardiovascular Award

Ashley Moellinger, a UAB nurse practitioner of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery who treats patients at Children’s of Alabama, was presented the Nursing Scientist Award at this year’s Cardiology 2014 conference. She presented her research, Postoperative Feeding Protocol Improves Outcomes After Arterial Switch Operation, during the conference.

Hayden Zaccagni, MD, a pediatric cardiologist who also practices at The Joseph S. Bruno Heart Center located in the Benjamin Russell hospital for Children, was one of eight finalists for the Outstanding Investigator Award for physicians. He gave a presentation on his research involving the use of acetaminophen to reduce lipid peroxidation in children undergoing Cardiopulmonary Bypass and its impact on post-CPB kidney injury.


American Family Care Opens Four New Clinics

American Family Care (AFC), has opened four new clinics in Georgia and Tennessee. The company now has 48 clinics in Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama.

This recent expansion comes after AFC acquired Doctors Express (DRX), the largest national urgent care franchise, in 2013. With the acquisition and recent expansion, AFC/ DRX and affiliates will operate 115 facilities in 26 states, providing care to more than one million patients.


BHS Names Sims Patient Safety Officer and Chief Pharmacist

Baptist Health System (BHS) has named Sally Jackson Sims, PharmD to the newly created position of Patient Safety Officer and Chief Pharmacist. Sims will be responsible for leading the Patient Safety Program at all BHS hospitals, working closely with pharmacy directors.

Prior to joining BHS, Sims served as the medication safety coordinator at Children’s of Alabama where she coordinated all medication safety activities and teams. Before joining Children’s, Sims served as the director of pharmacy at HealthPark Medical Center and Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida in Fort Myers, Florida.

Sims is a member of the Medication Safety Officers Society, American Society of Health System Pharmacists and the Alabama Society of Health System Pharmacists. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the McWhorter School of Pharmacy at Samford University.


Princeton Baptist Names Dudley COO

Princeton Baptist Medical Center has promoted Sarah Dudley, Princeton assistant administrator, to the administrative role of chief operating officer. As COO, Dudley will assume leadership over the clinical laboratory, pharmacy, inpatient and outpatient physical therapy, and the wound care center, in addition to continuing her previous responsibilities.

“I am confident that Sarah will be successful in her role as she has a strong track record of accomplishments at Princeton,” said Princeton President Betsy Postlethwait.

Dudley has been a member of the Princeton administrative team for four years, serving in multiple administrative roles. She received her Master of Science, magna cum laude, in health administration from UAB, and her Bachelor of Science in biomedical sciences with a minor in business from Auburn University. In addition, she completed an internship at Baylor University Medical Center in 2008 followed by a one-year administrative residency at Princeton in 2009.


Fayette Medical Center Long-term Care Facility Awarded

 The Long-term Care Facility at Fayette Medical Center has received the highest possible overall rating of five stars in U.S. News & World Report’s sixth annual “Best Nursing Homes” ranking for 2014.

This ranking highlights the top nursing homes out of nearly 16,000 facilities nationwide. U.S. News awarded the “Best Nursing Home” designation to homes that earned an overall rating of five stars from CMS in January 2014.

Long-term Care at Fayette Medical Center is a 122-bed facility that has provided services to geriatric patients for almost 50 years. According to Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, about 60 percent of individuals over 65 will require some type of long-term care services during their lifetime.


New Physician Joins Trinity

Aniqa Baqauddin, MD, who is board certified, specializes in Family Medicine, has joined Trinity Medical Clinics – Montclair.   

Baqauddin received her medical degree from Dow Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan and completed her residency at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Louisville, KY.  She was awarded the Paul C. Grider Outstanding Resident of the Year by the Department of Family and Geriatric Medicine at the University of Louisville.
